BACKGROUND // Childhood obesity is a major public health concern in Spain due to its high prevalence and its short- and long-term consequences. The school environment plays a key role in promoting healthy habits from an early age and reducing health inequalities. The aim of this paper was to describe the design and pre-implementation phase of a pilot health literacy project targeting primary school students in Aragón, aimed at promoting healthy eating and physical activity habits within the framework of the European JACARDI project (Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes).
METHODS // An implementation study based on the OPHELIA methodology was carried out, a participatory approach for developing context-specific interventions that combines needs assessment, co-design of actions with stakeholders, and subsequent evaluation. Sixteen schools from the Aragonese Network of Health-Promoting Schools are involved. Context analysis data collection includes the KIDMED and YAP-S questionnaires, as well as a questionnaire assessing knowledge of healthy habits, allowing descriptive analyses, bivariate comparisons, and mixed-effects multilevel models to assess associations while accounting for the clustering effect of schools.
EXPECTED RESULTS // It is expected the development and implementation of an adapted, sustainable school program co-designed with the educational community, aimed at improving health literacy and lifestyle habits.
CONCLUSIONS // The intervention is expected to enhance knowledge and habits among schoolchildren, contributing to the prevention of childhood obesity and related diseases. The participatory and cross-sectoral approach will facilitate adaptation, sustainability, and transferability to other school settings, and will help inform future public policies and strategies for child health promotion, reducing inequalities and improving quality of life from the school environment.
