Abstract

At this stage of the pandemic, there are studies that have analyzed the long-term consequences secondary to COVID-19 infection. Studying these sequelae is essential to understand the natural history of the disease, predict the impact it has beyond hospitalization and mortality, and determine whether post-discharge rehabilitation should be considered.

The consequences and complications were observed in the previous coronavirus epidemics that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2002 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) from 2012 to the present day. Reduced lung function and exercise capacity, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and reduced quality of life were observed in some affected people, suggesting that it is likely that SARS-CoV-2 may have a similar impact.

During the pathophysiological process, an intense inflammatory response is generated, first affecting the respiratory tract and subsequently the cardiovascular, central and peripheral nervous system, and skeletal muscle, in addition to the psychiatric and psychological effects that it can trigger.
