Abstract

In the last decade, the participation of nurses in research has increased and different roles have emerged in this area: clinical research nurse, nurse researcher, research support nurses and research consumer nurses. In this sense, the terms clinical research nurse and nurse researcher are often confused and used interchangeably. However, these are four different profiles, because their functions, training requirements, skills and responsibilities vary considerably and that is why it seems interesting to define the contents and competencies of each of them.

Multidisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity are fundamental in Public Health research, since they require the collaboration of different disciplines and areas of knowledge. Nurses are a fundamental element in Public Health research; they can be part of research teams and lead them, depending on the case, to address complex research problems located at the frontiers of knowledge.
