The symbolic foundation of gender violence in the healthcare work environment

The authors would like to congratulate Muñoz Varela et al. for his research on the social perception of workplace sexual harassment in the healthcare field published in the Spanish Journal of Public Health, as it highlights a poorly researched topic. One of the conclusions of the study is to point out the passivity of the organizational structure towards behaviors that favor sexual harassment, making it difficult for them to be made visible and reported. Of particular interest is the relationship between positions of power led by men and organizational tolerance towards sexual harassment directed at female healthcare professionals. It is this concealment and inaction in the face of gender violence that leads us to inquire about the mechanisms that legitimize it and that escape, in most cases, the control of health professionals, whether they unknowingly exercise domination, or suffer from it.
