Abstract

The health crisis caused by COVID-19 has taught us many lessons, one of them is the value of public service and the importance of our National Health System. Hence, a key objective is the expansion and improvement of the capabilities of the National Health System to face the challenges to improve the health of the population and the lives of people. Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality and the second leading cause of hospitalization in Spain, which represents a high healthcare cost and an enormous burden for patients and families, representing one of the greatest challenges for the National Health System. For this reason, cardiovascular diseases constitute a major public health problem that requires a comprehensive approach from the National Health System (SNS) and, more broadly, an approach from the perspective of cardiovascular health in our society.

On September 29, World Heart Disease Day is celebrated, for which various awareness-raising actions are carried out both internationally and nationally, with a very prominent role of civil society. It is an excellent opportunity to highlight the most extensive and ambitious initiative carried out to date to improve cardiovascular health in Spain: the Cardiovascular Health Strategy of the National Health System (ESCAV).
