Abstract

About 55 million people suffer from dementia worldwide. The progressive aging of the population suggests a very significant increase in dementia throughout the world. In Spain it is estimated that, in 2050, one in three Spaniards will be over 65 years old. The annual incidence of dementia in a study carried out in Spain was estimated between 10-15 cases per 1,000 person-years in the population over 65 years of age. In 2004, there were 431,000 people affected by dementia; If the growth forecasts are correct, it is estimated that in 2030 the number would reach almost 600,000 patients and, in 2050, close to one million. On many occasions, people with dementia are cared for by someone in their family or by informal caregivers, who have to face new challenges, both economic, social and personal, which generates a great psychological and emotional impact on them. Stress is greater when the information available is scarce or distorted.

From the Neurodegenerative Diseases Strategy of the SNS, aware of the importance that the care patients receive depends largely on the person who cares for them, a project has been initiated aimed at supporting and informing them with the edition of the Training Manual and support for caregivers of people with dementia.
