Background: The evidence, though inconsistent and limited, seems to suggest that regular physical activity (RPA) might protect against problematic Internet use (PIU) during adolescence. This study aims to describe the relationship between RPA and PIU among students aged 13 to 19 in Barcelona, differentiating by sex.
Methods: A cross-sectional study that used data from the 2021 FRESC Survey, which included 3,256 students in Secondary Education and High School enrolled in the city of Barcelona. The dependent variable was PIU, and the main explanatory variable was RPA, both measured with validated scales. Poisson regression was used to estimate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The analyses were stratified by age and sex.
Results: RPA was significantly more frequent in boys than in girls (90.5% vs. 82.5%). A lower risk of PIU was associated with RPA in older girls (aPR 0.62, 95% CI 0.39-0.97) and in boys (aPR 0.51, 95% CI 0.35-0.74). A lower risk of PIU was also observed in younger girls who practiced sports at least twice a week (aPR 0.53, 95% CI 0.31-0.88).
Conclusions: Our results suggest that RPA may act as a protective factor against PIU, particularly among girls. Physical activity promotion programs that include a gender perspective may be crucial in addressing PIU in this age group.
