Abstract

BACKGROUND // Chronic skin injuries have a negative impact on people’s quality of life and place an overload on the healthcare system. Their care is mainly based on moist healing, relief of pressure areas and control of exudate. Advanced therapies are available, including extracorporeal shock waves.

METHODS // A quasi-experimental design without control group will be prepared. Setting: Patients over eighteen years of age with skin injuries admitted at a medium-stay hospital. The necessary sample size will be thirty chronic skin injuries. Intervention: three to six shock wave sessions. Main outcome variable: surface injury area. Other variables: demographics, healing related factors and side effects. Analysis: descriptive with absolute and relative frequencies, as well as medians and percentiles; analytical with non-parametric tests for hypothesis testing. Significance will be established at 5%. STATA v18 statistical software will be used. Ethical considerations: need of ethics committee approval, following SPIRIT standards, registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

CONCLUSIONS // The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of shock wave application in the study setting. If positive results are achieved, tissue recovery would be improved compared to conventional care, which would have a positive impact on the quality of life of patients, and would have an impact in terms of cost-effectiveness and efficiency by reducing the size of the injury, the number of cures, material costs, the cost of nursing time, and the reduction of health care waste.
