Abstract

BACKGROUND // In 2025, Spain has celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Vaccination and Immunization Calendar throughout life, one of the most comprehensive calendars. However, there is little evidence regarding the evolution of vaccine research by Spanish authors during this period. This was the main objective of the present article.

METHODS // A descriptive bibliometric analysis was conducted using the main open-access and health science specialized databases. Various artificial intelligence tools were used to classify and analyze the different articles.

RESULTS // Since the introduction of the vaccination calendar in Spain, published articles account for 2.23% of total international research, with an increase from 0% in the 1975-79 period to 3.12% in 2020-24. The number of clinical trials published by Spanish authors has also risen, from 4 in the 1985-89 period to 363 between 2020-24, and only 41 in less than the first five months of 2025. The largest volume of research focuses on SARS-CoV-2 (21.97% of the total). Spanish authors have also shifted from publishing a larger volume in their native language (>30% of the total until the 2000-04 period) to internationalization (>50% in recent years).

CONCLUSIONS // The internationalization of Spanish research is evident and successful over the past fifty years, with a growing trend.
