Abstract

October 1 is International Hepatitis C Day, an infection of important dimensions for global public health. It is estimated that 71 million people are affected worldwide, and that there are nearly 400,000 deaths annually, mainly due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The introduction of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) in 2015 radically changed the prognosis of the disease, allowing viral clearance to be achieved in more than 95% of patients, although access to diagnosis and treatment is limited on a global scale.
