Abstract

BACKGROUND // Childhood and adolescent obesity are a significant Public Health problem due to its high prevalence, its potential present and future consequences, and its association with social inequalities. The objective of this study was to understand the temporal evolution of overweight and obesity in the child and adolescent population of Andalusia and to analyze its distribution according to the main axes of inequality (sex, age group, and family socioeconomic status), based on data from the Andalusian Health Survey.

METHODS // The databases of the Andalusian Health Survey were analysed for the four most recent waves covering individuals under sixteen years of age (2007, 2011/12, 2015/16 and 2022/23). Each wave included approximately 2,100 participants. An evolutionary analysis was conducted of the calibrated estimates of proportions and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals.

RESULTS // In 2023, 34.3% of the Andalusian child population was affected by overweight or obesity, showing a decline since 2012. Boys exhibited higher prevalence rates than girls throughout the entire study period. Children aged twelve-fifteen years and those from families with university-level education recorded the lowest percentages. Childhood obesity reached 14.2% in 2023, maintaining also a downward trend since 2012. Sex-related and socioeconomic inequalities were observed, with higher prevalence among boys, and in less advantaged households.

CONCLUSIONS // Since 2012, there has been a general decline in childhood obesity in Andalusia, which appears more clearly among the most socially advantaged groups. However, the inverse relationship between obesity and family socioeconomic position remains consistent over time, and sex-related inequalities persist.
