Abstract

The Spanish Journal of Public Health (RESP) is one of the oldest Spanish scientific journals, it began to be published in 1296 under the name of Technical Bulletin of the Health Directorate and since then it has published numerous original investigations and national technical-health studies, as well as works and documents of foreign origin that were of interest to National Health.

Throughout all these years of history the magazine has been modernized through successive stages. 1989 was a year of important changes: the RESP was provided with a Scientific Committee and an Editorial Committee, and the system of external review by experts in knowledge of the topics investigated and the methodologies used in the investigations was formalized. The publication standards were adapted to the uniformity requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals, developed by the International Committee of Directors of Biomedical Journals. The development and consolidation of these changes has allowed RESP to position itself in the main national and international repositories. Likewise, RESP's commitment to quality and scientific knowledge has led it to sign the Sant Joan D'Alacant declaration in defense of open access to scientific publications, or the San Francisco Declaration on the evaluation of research, which recognizes the need to improve the way in which the results of scientific research are evaluated.
