BACKGROUND // Nervous system congenital anomalies (NSCA) are an important health problem and represent a high perinatal and infant mortality. The aim of this paper was to determine and describe the trend and distribution of the NSCA in the Valencian Region, in children under one year of age, during the period 2007-2022.
METHODS // A cross-sectional study was performed. Live births, stillbirths and termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly with NSCA were selected from the congenital anomalies population-based Registry of Valencian Region between 2007-2022. The study variables were described, the prevalence according to EUROCAT methodology per 10,000 births (included live and still birth) and the survival rate in live births was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Statistical analyses were performed using Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS Statistics 23.
RESULTS // 1,862 cases were identified, the overall prevalence was 26.1/10,000 births. The most common type of end-pregnancy was live births (54.6%) and Hydrocephalus was the most frequent congenital malformation subgroup of NSCA (20.7%). In live births, the survival rate was 94.9% and statistically significant differences were identified according to NSCA. Regarding the pregnant women, mean age was 31.9 years and the majority birth country was Spain (69.1%). The highest prevalence was in the group under twenty years old (38.4/10,000 births) and in pregnant women resident in Castellon (34.1/10,000 births).
CONCLUSIONS // The prevalence of cases with NSCA is similar than European network registries of congenital anomalies. Identifying higher prevalence of cases among the youngest pregnant women or residents in Castellon, it could be connected to the higher presence in that province of pregnant women from certain countries.
