Prevention and management of obesity in childhood and adolescence: building social well-being through public action on the determinants of health

Obesity is one of the main global challenges. The complexity of the problem and its multifactorial origin mean that it must be addressed comprehensively by the various public administrations and, in particular, by the health system, with ongoing care in Primary and hospital care, constituting a priority for Public Health. In the case of childhood and adolescent obesity, the prevalence tripled worldwide between 1990 and 2021, and is expected to continue increasing, especially until 2030 in all populations and regions, reaching estimates of 15.6% in 2050 among children aged five to fourteen and 14.2% among children aged fifteen to twenty-four. In Spain, this prevalence has remained stable, and even slightly declined, in recent years, although only in families from higher social classes or incomes. This, in any case, demonstrates a clear social gradient that requires an equity-based and intersectoral approach if we are to develop effective policies and actions.
